Often imitated, never duplicated is one of XY Find It's most innovative features, KeepNear™. If you'd like to know more about KeepNear™, how it works, how to troubleshoot it, how to turn it on or off, or anything else you might ever need to know about KeepNear™, you'll find it here.
If you have any questions not answered in this article, please feel free to contact us.
What is KeepNear™ and how does it work?
XY Finders are Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) beacons, meaning they output a low-strength radio signal and have a range similar to a walkie talkie. Your BLE-enabled device can communicate back and forth with BLE beacons as long as its Bluetooth services are turned on.
KeepNear™ is a feature of the XY Find It app that alerts you whenever your XY Finder comes into or goes out of Bluetooth range of your smartphone (or tablet computer). It issues a push notification through your device's operating system to let you know that either you've gotten too far away from your XY Finder to detect it any longer (or something is blocking its signal), or that your device can detect it again after having been away.
XY Find It has to be running on your device and Bluetooth services must be turned on in order for KeepNear™ to function.
Turning KeepNear™ on or off
One of the questions we get most frequently is how to switch KeepNear on or off. It couldn't be easier!
Open XY Find It and make sure you're logged into the account where the item you wish to change is registered. Tap on the tab at the bottom representing the item you want to KeepNear™ (or stop keeping near).
You'll see a button in the bottom left corner that says KeepNear. When the bell icon on the button is solid white, KeepNear™ is on. When the bell has a slash through it, KeepNear™ is off.
The change you want to make takes effect as soon as you touch the button. When you're done, push XY Find It to the background and resume using your phone or tablet as normal. It's that easy!
KeepNear™ is triggering too frequently
Before we go any further, let's turn KeepNear™ off so it won't get on your nerves. You'll find instructions for turning it off directly above this section – "Turning KeepNear™ on or off."
Important: Please don't uninstall XY Find It to turn off KeepNear™, it will cease all use of your XY Finders. It's much easier to just turn off KeepNear™ before proceeding.
Next, let's make sure you're updated to the most recent version of the XY Find It app. Older versions might not be as stable as the current version, so it's important to keep XY Find It up to date.
If you're using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch: Open the App Store app on your iOS device, and tap on the Updates button on the bottom near the right. Tap on XY Find It, then tap on Update to download the newest version of XY Find It. Allow it to install, then restart your device.
If no update is available, and you have XY Find It installed, this means that XY Find It is fully up to date.
If you're using an Android tablet or smartphone: Open the Play Store app and search for "XY Find It," then select XY Find It from the list of results. Tap on the Update button near the top of the page and allow the new version of the app to download and install, then restart your device.
If no update is available, and you have XY Find It installed, this means that XY Find It is fully up to date.
If XY Find It is fully up to date and you're still having issues with KeepNear™, please make sure your XY Finder has a fresh battery and isn't exhibiting any unusual behavior, such as beeping randomly. If you are having any trouble with your XY Finder, or for any reason you continue to have difficulty with KeepNear™, please contact our customer obsession team.
KeepNear™ isn't triggering
Some settings can affect how, and even whether, XY Find It is able to trigger KeepNear™. Let's take a moment to check them and make sure your settings are optimal.
If you're using an iPhone, iPad, or iPod: Open the Settings app on your iOS device. Scroll to the bottom and select XY Find It. Under "XY Find It Settings" you can choose whether you would like KeepNear™ to be set to Normal or High sensitivity.
More importantly, under Notifications, please make sure "Allow Notifications" is on (green), after which you'll be able to set several different specific preferences:
If you're using an Android smartphone or tablet: Open the Settings app on your Android device and find Apps, and then select XY Find It. Make sure that Show Notifications is turned on, or depending on your device, make sure that Block is turned off.
It's also a good idea to check that your XY Finder is working. It may need a fresh battery – take a moment to press the XY button on the front and try it with other XY Find It features to ensure that your XY Finder is fully functional!
